Georges Bizet’s four-act *Carmen* follows a factory worker in Seville whose insistence on living by her own rules draws soldiers and smugglers into a tightening spiral of desire and violence. Premiered in Paris in 1875, it challenged the era’s operatic decorum and later became a repertory staple in New York, where it has long served as a touchstone for debates about “realism” on the opera stage. Now at Union Hall, the story is reframed in a rock/pop setting with LATE BLOOMERS and solo turns by Grace, Reiter, Gus, and Heagerty. One reason it endures is its refusal to moralize its heroine, even as the consequences arrive.
