Georges Bizet’s *Les pêcheurs de perles* is a three-act French opera set in an imagined ancient Ceylon, where a pledge of friendship splinters under shared desire and a priestess is torn between devotion and personal love. Written years before *Carmen*, it shows Bizet testing a supple, lyrical style and a keen ear for ensembles; the famous friendship duet has outlived the opera’s early mixed reception. New York has long embraced the duet in concert and recital culture, even when the full work appeared only intermittently. Now it is playing at Amore Opera.
