The Lion King
14 upcoming performances in New York
Disney Theatrical’s stage version of *The Lion King* continues its long New York run at the Minskoff Theatre, a fixture of Times Square since its Broadway arrival in 1997. Adapted from the 1994 animated film, it follows Simba’s passage from exile to responsibility across an animal kingdom shaped by ritual, lineage, and loss. Director Julie Taymor’s design language merges performers, masks, and large-scale puppetry, borrowing from multiple performance traditions without hiding the mechanics. Its lasting significance on Broadway is partly formal: it made visible how mainstream musical theater could be rebuilt through theatrical craft rather than realism.
