Symphony No. 2
6 upcoming performances in New York
Charles Ives’s *Symphony No. 2* sits at the hinge point between European symphonic tradition and an unmistakably American, collage-like ear. Hymn tunes, marches, and familiar melodic fragments surface and collide inside a conventional four-movement frame, as if the concert hall were overhearing the street. At David Geffen Hall, Gustavo Dudamel leads the New York Philharmonic in a program that places Ives alongside a new work by Leilehua Lanzilotti and appearances by Yunchan Lim. One can hear Ives testing how much American memory a symphony can hold without breaking its form.
