About Polka Chinata(dance)
Polka Chinata is a partnered dance from Bologna, developed in the early 1900s and long practiced in working-class ballrooms, where two men move in close hold through quick turns and deep, synchronized squats. Once near disappearance, it has been preserved through archival research and contemporary staging, becoming a small but pointed record of Italy’s social history and changing ideas of masculinity in dance. At L’Alliance New York, Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels presents it in a live performance context. Its rigor reads less as spectacle than as craft, with intimacy built from precise weight-sharing.
